East Asian Papermaking for Beginners

June 7-8, 2025 9:00am-4:00pm

Murphy, NC 28906

Two-Day Introduction to Korean Ssangbal Ddeugi Technique with Bobby Choe-Henderson

Join us for a special two-day, hands-on workshop introducing the fundamentals of East Asian papermaking, with a focus on Korea’s traditional ssangbal ddeugi (twin screen-forming) technique. Taught by artist and traditional Korean papermaker Bobby Choe-Henderson, this beginner-friendly course emphasizes small-scale and sustainable practices rooted in Korean cultural traditions. We’ll transform raw fiber into beautiful sheets of hanji (handmade Korean paper) ready for your next arts project. Come ready to work as a team to prep our fibers and then work at individual papermaking vats to pull your paper on modified bamboo screens. And yes, we will get a little wet!

Over the course of two days, students will:

Explore the history and significance of East Asian papermaking

Learn about processing natural fibers such as dak (paper mulberry bark)

Practice the ssangbal ddeugi method using modified bamboo papermaking screens

Create their own sheets of handmade paper using traditional and contemporary drying techniques

No prior experience necessary. All materials will be provided.

Cost: $225

Workshop Cancellation Policy:

All workshop registrations are non-refundable, with no exceptions. This policy is in place because the classroom space is reserved and paid for in advance based on enrollment. As a small-scale program, we rely on accurate attendance to cover these fixed costs. If you are unable to attend, you may transfer your registration to another person by notifying us at least 48 hours before the workshop begins.
