Workshop Details

Workshops are taught within my personal arts studio at Anchorlight in Downtown Raleigh, NC.

Beginner Hanji: Ssangbal-ddeugi (2-Night Workshop)

$225 · Limited to 6 participants

A relaxed, hands-on introduction to traditional Korean papermaking. This two-night workshop invites participants into the tactile and rhythmic process of making hanji using ssangbal-ddeugi, a foundational sheet formation technique practiced with modified student bamboo screens. Working at small vats, students will learn how raw fiber becomes paper—through water, motion, and repetition. Designed as an accessible and social experience, this workshop emphasizes shared making, experimentation, and the quiet satisfaction of forming sheets by hand.

Schedule

Night 1 (6:00–10:00pm)
Introduction to hanji, fiber preparation, and initial sheet formation

Night 2 (6:00–10:00pm)
Continued production, pressing, peeling, and drying methods

Materials & Work

All materials are provided.

Participants will work at their own personal small vats, allowing for continuous sheet formation and an individualized pace of learning. As part of the workshop, students contribute to a shared body of paper while developing their individual technique.

Each participant will leave with a curated selection of finished hanji sheets. Due to the material intensity of traditional hanji, not all sheets produced during the workshop will be taken home.

Some sheets will continue drying after the workshop and will be available for later pickup or shipping.

Additional Information

This workshop involves standing, repetitive motion, and working with water, but is designed to be approachable for beginners.

Next Steps

Participants who complete this workshop may apply a $50 credit toward the Hanji Intensive (2.5 Day).

A $75 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve your place.

The remaining balance of $150 is due 3 days prior to the workshop.

Due to limited enrollment, deposits are non-refundable. If you need to cancel, your deposit may be applied toward a future workshop only if your spot can be filled from a waitlist.

A waitlist will be maintained once the workshop is full.
