Workshops are taught within my personal arts studio at Anchorlight in Downtown Raleigh, NC.
Step into the rhythm of Korea's traditional indigenous papermaking methods.
This intensive offers a rare opportunity to learn hanji through webal-ddeugi and ssangbal-ddeugi, time-honored sheet formation techniques practiced with handmade, woven bamboo screens. Working in a small, focused group, participants move between vats of different scales, developing an embodied understanding of fiber, water, and motion.
The workshop follows the full arc of papermaking: from preparing and beating fiber to forming, pressing, and drying sheets. Emphasis is placed on repetition, sensitivity, and control, learning to read the pulp, the screen, and the subtle resistance of water.
Participants will work across three vats:
Each scale offers a distinct physical and technical experience, from intimate control to full-body coordination.
Friday (6:00–9:30pm)
Introduction to hanji, small-vat setup, and initial sheet formation
Saturday (10:00am–5:00pm)
Introduction and demonstration of medium and large vats; fiber processing, vat preparation, full production, and setup of overnight press
(1-hour lunch break)
Sunday (10:00am–5:00pm)
Continued production, pressing, peeling, and drying methods
(1-hour lunch break)
All materials are provided.
Papermaking in this workshop is approached as a shared production process. Participants will contribute to a collective body of work while developing their individual skill.
Each student will leave with a curated collection of hanji sheets, including examples from each vat size and stage of the process. Due to the material intensity of traditional hanji, participants will not take home every sheet produced during the workshop.
Some sheets will continue drying after the workshop and will be available for later pickup or shipping.
This is a physically engaged process involving standing, repetitive motion, and working with water.
Participants should bring their own lunch for Saturday and Sunday or plan to step out briefly. Refrigerator space is very limited.
A $200 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve your place.
The remaining balance of $475 is due 7 days prior to the workshop.
Due to limited enrollment, deposits are non-refundable. If you need to cancel, your deposit may be applied toward a future workshop only if your spot can be filled from a waitlist.
A waitlist will be maintained once the workshop is full.
Enrollment is limited to three participants to ensure sustained, hands-on time at the vats.
