Intro to Webal-ddeugi: From Start to Finish

$275 · Private Instruction

An intimate introduction to webal-ddeugi, Korea’s indigenous sheet formation technique used in traditional hanji papermaking.

This private 4-hour workshop offers participants focused, one-on-one instruction in the rhythm and physicality of forming hanji by hand using a medium-sized vat and traditional bamboo screen. Designed as an accessible entry point into Korean papermaking, the workshop emphasizes direct experience at the vat while introducing the foundational stages of fiber preparation, sheet formation, pressing, and drying.

Participants will work with paper made from the plant fibers of paper mulberry trees and leave with a small collection of hanji sheets formed during the session.

Unlike the larger Hanji Intensive, this workshop functions as a concentrated introduction to webal-ddeugi, allowing students to experience the technique without committing to a multi-day format.

No prior experience is required.

Workshop Structure

The first portion of the workshop includes an introduction to hanji, discussion of traditional fiber preparation methods, and hands-on experience cleaning and beating fiber.

Participants then spend the majority of the session at the vat practicing sheet formation through repeated pulls and guided one-on-one instruction.

The final portion of the workshop covers pressing, peeling, and drying methods.

Materials & Work

All materials are provided.

Participants will work at their own personal medium hanji vat, allowing for continuous sheet formation and an individualized pace of learning.

Each participant will leave with a curated selection of finished hanji sheets. Due to the material intensity of traditional hanji, not all sheets produced during the workshop will be taken home.

Some sheets will continue drying after the workshop and will be available for later pickup or shipping.

Additional Information

This workshop involves standing, repetitive motion, and working with water, but is designed to be approachable for beginners.

Continuing Study

Participants who complete this workshop may apply a $75 credit toward the Hanji Intensive (2.5 Day).

Registration & Payment

Full payment of $275 is required to reserve your session.

Due to the limited one-on-one nature of these workshops, payments are non-refundable.

If you need to reschedule, your payment may be transferred to a future session with at least 72 hours notice.

Enrollment

Each session is limited to one participant to ensure sustained, hands-on instruction and uninterrupted time at the vat.
